After serving 7 years as the Chief of Atlanta's fire department, Kelvin Cochran, is fired by Atlanta Major Kasim Reed, after voicing his freedom of religious speech, and God fearing convictions, that homosexuality is wrong, within a book he penned titled, "Who Told You That You Were Naked". A decorated firefighter, devout Christian, deacon and Baptist Sunday school teacher, Cochran confirmed during a rally after the fact (aired live on the Joy FM Christian radio station and many others), that he "Stands for Jesus!", no matter the persecution. Missionary, Franklin Graham, (Billy Graham's son and founder of "Samaritan's Purse") stated Chochran was being bullied, "persecuted" for his religious views as a Bible believing Christian. I agree.
Cochran referred to homosexuality as being an "unclean", "sexual perversion", "vulgar", and "inappropriate." One of many such unholy sexual perversions in my biblical opinion (reference ministry websites: www.synthiaesther.com, www.sexhisway.com, www.xxxhisway.com). Mayor Kasim Reed stated, "I want to be clear that the material in Chief Cochran's book is not representative of my personal beliefs, and is inconsistent with the administration's work to make Atlanta a more welcoming City for all citizens - regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, race, and religious beliefs." However, the fact that Cochran was fired for his freedom of religious speech, shows Reed's actions to be contrary to his own statements.
Chochran confirmed he ran the idea of the book by the City's ethics department, receiving no push back, and gave Reed a copy of the book a year ago. Atlanta's openly gay City Council member, Alex Wan, supported Reed's decision. The Faith and Freedom Coalition posted on their website a call for members to contact the major requesting Cochran's reappointment.
Reed did not list discrimination as a course of Cochran's termination, instead citing, violation of the City's Code of Conduct in releasing the book. Reed confirmed by statement, "This is about how we treat one another. And so those folks who are calling me and telling me I should retain him. I just want you to know one thing, it is religious decisions are not the basis of the problem, his judgement is the basis of the problem." You mean, God's judgement, in accordance with Christian Biblical beliefs? That's what Cochran's religious opinions are based upon.
Sincere Christians believe we are to love the sinner and hate the sin, reaching out to the LGBT citizen's when possible. Cochran, as a believer, wrote his book as a religious expression of faith. As such, we as Christians should not be bullied, persecuted, and fired, for our beliefs. Nor should gay's for that matter. News sources state perhaps this case will go to court. If it does, I believe, Cochran would be reinstated. As no Court in the USA, would take a stand for freedom against one belief system, in favor of another.
My prayers go out to Kelvin Cochran, who has become another "targeted" Christian, whose voice inspires us all, to stand up for our faith in Jesus Christ our Lord, as well as our Biblical beliefs. I also pray for the gay community that lives among us. That they too can grow to tolerate opposite opinions from that of their own.
